Cargo

Joint Logistics Over the Shore (JLOTS) package; 5,657.66 CBM

Overview

In October 2019, Military Sealift Command contracted US Ocean to load and deploy general cargo including breakbulk, vehicles, container prefab building components, and a 5,657.66 CBM JLOTS package to McMurdo Station, Antarctica, for the National Science Foundation. Traditionally the cargo for this mission is delivered alongside the supply vessel onto a an “ice pier”. However, this particular season the ice pier was deemed unusable. When the M/V Ocean Giant arrived in McMurdo Station she deployed the JLOTS package offshore, then proceeded to discharge the cargo safely and successfully across the JLOTS causeway.

Location: Port Hueneme, California, to McMurdo Station, Antarctica
Duration: October 2019 to February 2020
Client: MSC, NSF
Vessel: M/V Ocean Giant

Challenges

  • Loading the JLOTS package on top of existing cargo
  • Deploying the JLOTS package in arctic conditions
  • Unloading vessel cargo across the JLOTS platform

Solution

Utilizing our in-house technical department, an efficient stow plan was created to safely load and discharge the entirety of the cargo.

Loading in Port Hueneme, California, and Lyttelton, New Zealand, was completed on time and the vessel sailed to deploy the cargo in McMurdo Station Antarctica. The cargo was discharged, and the mission was completed successfully.
